The ninth month of the muslim year, during which strict fasting is observed from dawn to dusk (i.e.) from pre-fast meal which is called as "suhoor" till post-fast meal which is called as "Iftar" is known as Ramadan. During this 30 days, it's the time for one's inner-reflection, devotion to the superior and "self - Control". Ramadan is also a time for intensive worship, reading of the Quran, giving charity, purifying one's behaviour and doing good deeds. Fasting during ramadan is one of the Five Pillars (fundamental Religious Duties) of Islam. This is the time when the Quran (Islamic holy book) is said to have been revealed to prophet Muhammad, this occurred on Laylat Al-Qadr one of the last 10 nights of this month.
Since Ramadan is a special time, Muslims in many parts of the world prepare certain favorite foods of their cuisine during this month for the evening meal. It's a common practice to break the fast by sipping a glass of water at 3 intervals with dates by following the custom of Prophet Muhammad. Which is followed by the sunset prayer and thereafter the dinner is served. Also, Muslims often invite one another to their house to share the evening meal.
So that's a Short & Sweet outline about what is the purpose of this month! See you all soon in my next post :) Keep watching this space for more.
May the almighty accept our prayers and acknowledge our fast& purify our souls.
